Can ECG Detect Heart Attack? | Dr. Rahul Patil | Best Cardiologist Pune

In this video Dr. Rahul Patil – Cardiologist in Pune, India has spoken about the need of ECG for diagnosis of a heart attack.

Recently a patient of Dr. Patil asked him “Is ECG Necessary for Diagnosis of a Heart Attack?”

To make a diagnosis of heart attack a doctor or a cardiologist needs 3 things:
1. Patients Symptoms
2. ECG
3. Blood Tests

If out of the above 3 things, even 2 are present it confirms heart attack. As the symptoms of heart attack are different in different people so we need supportive diagnosis of it with ECG and blood test.

The classical symptoms of a heart attack is
1. Heaviness in the chest which goes to left shoulder or right shoulder and left hand, also feels like someone is sitting on your chest.
2. Sweating
3. Giddiness
4. Nausea
5. Vomiting

These are classical symptoms of heart attack that last for 20 – 30 minutes and increases with time. 70% patients may show classical symptoms of heart attack where as 20 % patient may present with just a severe form of acidity, shoulder pain, jaw pain or a back pain.
As symptoms are different in different people that’s the reason we need ECG to confirm. From the onset of chest discomfort if the ECG is done in first 2 hours, ECG may be absolutely normal. In that case you need to stay back in emergency or casualty department to repeat ECG in every half an hour to confirm the diagnosis. With in first 2 hours ECG could be normal, sometimes it has been seen that up to 6 hours ECG could be normal from the onset of chest pain. So in first 6 hours there are high chances that an heart attack can be missed. So every hospital will advice you to stay back and repeat the ECG. At the same time a blood test called high sensitivity Troponin Test or Trop I Test if this test is positive in first 6 hours of onset of heart attack it confirms heart attack.

Out of these 3
1. Chest Pain
2. ECG
3. Blood Test
If two are positive it confirm the presence of heart attack.
